Back in June, I reviewed the Learn a Language DVD from Rock ‘N Learn. Because I live in an extremely mono-lingual area with few opportunities to encounter languages other than English, I am always looking for materials with which to expose my children to other languages. My preschooler daughter very much enjoys the original Learn a Language. Thus, when Rock ‘N Learn recently offered me the chance to review the accompanying Learn a Language: Let’s Play Outside, I eagerly accepted the opportunity.
Price
The Learn a Language: Let’s Play Outside DVD from Rock ‘N Learn currently retails for $19.99, which I consider reasonably and comparatively priced. My preschooler daughter frequently asks to watch her collection of Rock ‘N Learn DVDs, so I would definitely purchase Learn a Language: Let’s Play Outside for the current retail price. The DVD is also available on Amazon via my affiliate link.
DVD Content
Recommended for children ages 2 and older, Learn a Language: Let’s Play Outside exposes young learners to six languages on one DVD: Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, Italian, German, and English. Little language learners can discover more of a second language by exploring the outdoor world of playful activities and common animals. I allowed my daughter to choose which language that she wanted to learn, and she chose the Mandarin Chinese. Just as with the original Learn a Language DVD, she found the new language fascinating. She also really likes the German version, and watching the English version helps reinforce vocabulary in her first language.
Learn a Language: Let’s Play Outside introduces young learners to simple words and phrases that focus on the outside world. Each language runs for 35 minutes, which is long enough to teach quite a few words but not too long that a younger child loses interest. My almost four-year-old sat and watched the entire Mandarin Chinese version without getting up. Children will learn over 75 words and phrases in each of the six languages. Additionally, the content of the DVD is simple and repetitive, which is perfect for younger children who tend to enjoy and thrive on repetition. However, despite the repetition, the content remains engaging, using a mixture of familiar characters, animation, and actual photos. Learn a Language: Let’s Play Outside is also immediately recognizable as a member of the Rock ‘N Learn family of educational DVDs, and the consistency helps younger learners stay engaged.
My favorite aspect of the Learn a Language: Let’s Play Outside is the bright animation and photos. The colorfulness helps capture and hold the attention of the youngest learners. All the different visuals also help teach vocabulary words in a foreign language to toddlers, preschoolers, and beyond. I know next to nothing about the Mandarin Chinese language. However, as I watched the DVD with my daughter, I was able to figure out the meanings of most of the words and phrases from the context. My preschooler daughter, too, was able to discern many of the words from the pictures.
Accessing the six different languages on Learn a Language: Let’s Play Outside is also quite easy. When I first popped the DVD into my player, the main menu appeared, and I was able to choose the language that my daughter wanted to watch. Through the main menu, I can also select on chapter on which to focus. I can also switch around the subtitles. Overall, I consider using the DVD features extremely user-friendly.
Final Verdict
If your child has mastered the words and phrases on the original Learn a Language from Rock ‘N Learn, then Learn a Language: Let’s Play Outside is a great addition to your educational DVD library. The DVD is easy to navigate, and each of the six language lessons runs for an engaging 35 minutes. More importantly, the brightly colored animation and interesting adventures capture and keep the attention of even the youngest students. My preschooler daughter enjoys watching the language learning DVD, especially the Mandarin Chinese version. At $19.99, Learn a Language: Let’s Play Outside is an affordable tool for teaching six languages for young learners.
